Raises $4,529 for NAMI

The HIU MFT program has been participating in the Orange County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Walk for the past two years now. Not only was HIU a sponsor for this year's walk, but as a team, they raised a program record amount of $4,529.00 and had 70 registered team members join them on walk day. In addition, their admissions team was represented  by Danielah Germon where she was able to have numerous interactions with other walkers requesting information about the MFT program. Other individuals that played a key role in managing the Hope's table were Graduate Assistants Danny Nava, Andy Del Castillo, and Jacob Kavanaugh.

The goal as a Hope community was to come together, raise money, and walk for those who struggle with a mental illness. This event plays a vital role in not only reducing the stigma that surrounds mental illness, but allows the HIU faculty, staff, and students to play a part in providing funding towards mental health services that will be utilized by thousands of individuals and families all throughout Orange County.

I am beyond excited and grateful to have been chosen as a 2014-2015 AAMFT/MFP fellowship recipient. The program goals for MFP are very much complementary to my professional aspirations, related to servicing underserved populations via, therapy/treatment, education, advocacy and research. I self-identify as an African American female, and a first generation college student from a low-income family background.

Therefore, as my identity affords me membership in several underserved cultural groups, the work encouraged by this fellowship is dear to my heart. In addition to the obvious benefit of financial support from this fellowship, I am utterly thankful for the training opportunities, networking and professional development offered to fellows in this program.

My participation in the MFP will help me become a better multicultural competent therapist, educator, researcher and advocate.  Although financial support definitely helps, this manner of preparation will prove to be invaluable to my personal development as a therapist, my contribution to the field and to my future clients and students. Anyone who has a passion for working with underserved populations, multicultural competence, diversity, research and providing substance abuse treatment should definitely consider applying for the AAMFT MFP fellowship!

I am very proud to be a recipient of the 2014-2015 AAMFT/SAMHSA Minority Fellowship. This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime as it will allow me tremendous networking, professional development, learning and research opportunities. What also excites me is the chance to obtain mentorship from other MFTs around the nation.

I am eager to expand upon my knowledge base regarding substance use and cultural competency in MFT. Furthermore, I am positive this experience will broaden both my professional and academic horizons and cause me to continue to be creative in my problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. I will be more than happy to share more about the fellowship and the benefits I have obtained from it as the semester wears on.

Lawrence Jackson - Bio Pic.jpgLawrence Jackson is from Dallas, TX. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology Pre-Medicine with a double minor in Biology and Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, LA. He is currently a 2nd year Master of Science student in Marriage & Family Therapy at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

He has served as the Student Director for new student orientation, the Chief of Staff for the Student Government Association, and the Spring Fest event chair at Xavier University. He has also worked several years as a Lead Counselor and Science Teacher for a Summer Arts and Athletic Camp in Dallas, Texas. Such activities demonstrate his commitment to education through building reciprocal relationships and his involvement with the surrounding community. In terms of his scholarship, Mr. Jackson is well on his way to a bright career. Prior to coming to UNLV, he traveled here as a presenter at the American College Personnel Association's National Conference. His group's presentation, "Students Helping Students: Facilitating Collaborative Learning Experiences", focuses on their experiences as student instructional leaders and the techniques used to work with students.

His current interests are dealing with at-risk populations and low income households dealing with divorce like behavior. He wants to research the effects that it has on children's development and confidence levels. He plans to continue to pursue his aspirations by attaining a doctoral degree after the completion of his program. His dreams are to be able to research, teach, practice therapy, as well as inspire others from low income populations to rise above their surroundings and become successful. He is not working towards his goals to be one of the first to make it out of the troubling environments. He is working towards his goals so he will not be the last. He truly live by the motto "inspire before you expire" and uses his accomplishments as tools to motivate the next generation to believe in the potential that they possess.

Welcome Lambda Chapter http://www.deltakappamft.org/news/welcomelambda WELCOME LAMBDA CHAPTER!

Delta Kappa is extremely excited to announce the installation of the Lambda Chapter at the University of Akron! On August 30, 2014, members of the Lambda Chapter were present for the chapter installation and membership induction ceremony held at the home of Molly McDowell-Burns, the newly elected Program Vice-President of the chapter. The newly installed officers then hosted a cookout for all MFT students to kick of the fall semester.

Ulia Fisher, the chapter's first President, had the following to say about the chapter's organization on the campus of The University of Akron:

"We are extremely excited to announce the Grand Opening of the Delta Kappa Lambda chapter of The International Marriage and Family Therapy Honor Society....being a part of the international honor society will afford our program more opportunities for networking with other chapters, and it will give us more visibility and credibility in our local community.
To this end, our chapter will be able to collaborate with the current ten chapters on events, board members will gain access to guidance from more experienced chapters, and members will be able to network with other chapter members. Such collaboration potential will help our chapter grow, but more importantly, it will help our members and all MFT students to grow and contribute to our field.

It has been an exciting transition and we invite you to be a part of it!"

Lambda Chapter President
